Alaska Lingcod
You ever see a fish that looks like it belongs in a fantasy movie? That’s the Alaska lingcod, and out of Kodiak, these toothy dragons are legendary. Lingcod get their nickname from their gnarly jaws and prehistoric look, with big heads, wide mouths, camo coloring, and rows of razor-sharp teeth. They aren’t actually cod, but their attitude and size make them a big target for anyone who wants a real saltwater challenge.
Chasing Lingcod: The Ultimate Kodiak Adventure
When you’re fishing Kodiak, chasing lingcod is one of the top thrills. The season opens on July 1 (always check ADF&G for details before heading out because regulations shift). Usually it’s 30 to 40 minutes by boat out to the deep reefs and rocky ridges of Shelikof Strait. We toss down Savage jigs, swim baits, and if we’re feeling sporty, live bait. When the tide isn’t cranking, break out lighter rods for wild battles. The average fish runs 15 to 25 pounds, but do not blink. Kodiak lingcod over 40 pounds are not rare.
If you hook a lingcod, hold on. When they hit, you feel it. It’s an ambush strike like there’s no tomorrow. These bad boys hug the rocks deep down and explode when your lure gets close. Sometimes, we’re in the middle of a lingcod frenzy and somebody raises a surprise halibut too, just part of the action. Once you get your first dragon to the surface, you’re hooked for life.
Lingcod on the Table
One taste and you’ll know why angler’s target Alaska lingcod. The meat is pure, thick, and flakey. It’s mild, a little sweet, and perfect for almost anything: fish tacos, pan-seared with lemon, oven-baked over a bed of greens, you name it. Try it battered and fried for crunchy fish and chips. Looking for next-level flavor? Baked lingcod with citrus and herbs absolutely rocks.
